Zeus continues to adapt to life on three legs

imagehi all,  I took Zeus to the bark park yesterday and he made a bee-line towards the pond. At first I thought no way, but he seemed so excited and joy-filed that I let him go. It was so nice to see him splash around and play just like his old self!!!  Love Zeus and Theresa

  2. Hi!
Our dog Moose will be having his front leg amputated next week. Needless to say we are devastated but are accepting what needs to be done. I would like to know what to expect when he comes home. If you can give us any advice it would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely Marlene

    1. Hi Marlene. I totally understand what you are going through. I cried a river and then some. Being your dogs name is moose I assume he is large. What breed is he? I think that we take this harder than our dogs who seem to adapt pretty well. The hardest thing for Zues was getting up and also going up and down steps. I found it best to assist him by using a beach towel to help him get up and assist him with navigating the steps worked best. You can not use a harness at first since it would run on his incision. The first few days were tough but by day five or so Zeus was getting around pretty well. If you have wood floors you will have to put something down since he will slide. Ask your surgeon to clip his nails short while he is under anesthesia. I purchased cheap yoga mats at Walmart and placed them down my hall. And purchased some inexpensive area rugs. House looks a little a mess but better that than having him fall. Zeus has taken a few spills down the steps which is horrifying but he only seemed hurt once. I have to remind him to take it easy but dogs will be dogs. I do not think he had too much pain and I had him off all his meds by a week. I feel that they were making him anxious. Zeus is one month post surgery and is finally returning to his old self. I have just started taking him for walks and just pay close attention to his energy level. You and Moose will get through this. Also I brought a soft collar that has an inflatable inner tube instead of using the cone that the vet gives you to prevent him from chewing his incision. He wore it for 2 weeks until the stitches were removed. You can buy them at the pet store. Will Moose need chemo. Zeus tolerated his first dose just fine he will go again on Thursday. Please feel free to reach out anytime. I will be glad to help you. Be strong Theresa and Zeus

  3. Hi Marlene and Moose! You’ve gotten great feedback from Theresa.

Consider posting about Moose in the forums. You’ll get tons of additional support over their, in addition to the great support Theresa has given. Very nice of you Theresa!

We all understand the nightmare of coming to the realization that our dogs need an amputation. We also understand the happiness of seeing our dogs getting on living life to the fullest. Recovery is no picnic for about two weeks, so stay connected! I’ll look forward to seeing your post.

    Hugs to all!
